The grand challenge faced in VineScout is crossing the bridge between a functional prototype and a commercial solution in less than 3 years. This means that the exponential step from TRL 6 to TRL 9 should be achieved by the end of 2020.

Along this three-year trip we have to cope with a number of reliability issues derived from leaving an autonomous machine several hours in open fields under harsh environmental conditions, where electronics and computers may suffer, and unexpected obstacles –including people- are prone to appear. Off-road terrains will have to be agilely traversed by vehicles whose retail price must compete with farm machinery, entailing budgets that remain far away from other ground platforms for similar terrains built by the military or space exploration.
